Blood Test May Spot Asbestos-Linked Cancer

A blood test could help screen for pleural mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, a new study shows. The test checks blood levels of a protein called osteopontin. Blood osteopontin levels “rise dramatically” in the early stages of pleural mesothelioma, says researcher Harvey Pass, MD, in a news release. “A rise in the level of this biomarker in workers with past asbestos exposure may indicate to physicians that these people need to be followed even more closely for the development of cancer,” he says. Pass is the chief of the division of thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology in the cardiothoracic surgery department at New York University’s medical school. He is also a professor of surgery there. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber. Its uses have included insulation, fire protection, and construction materials. Asbestos is not always an immediate hazard, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. “In fact, if asbestos can be maintained in good condition, it is recommended that it be left alone and periodic surveillance performed to monitor its condition,” states the EPA’s web site. “It is only when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed or the materials become damaged that it becomes a hazard. When the materials become damaged, the fibers separate and then may become airborne,” the web site states. More : webmd.com |

Fujirebio’s mesothelioma test is under review by the FDA
Fujirebio Diagnostics (FDI; Malvern, Pennsylvania) has submitted a 510(k) application to the FDA for clearance of Mesomark, the first blood test for mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos exposure that occurs in the lining of the body's organs, or mesothelium, usually in the chest cavity. Mesomark, a manual enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is designed to work by identifying serum tumor markers called soluble mesothelin-related peptides (SMRP), the company said. Those peptides are released into the bloodstream by malignant mesothelioma cells. FDI's mesothelioma assay is a two-step immunoassay that quantitates SMRP in human blood Source : accessmylibrary.com
Fujirebio Diagnostics Receives FDA Approval for the MESOMARK® Assay for the Management of Mesothelioma Patients
Fujirebio Diagnostics, Inc. (FDI) received approval from the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) under the Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) program for the MESOMARK® Assay, the world’s first in-vitro test for mesothelioma, a form of cancer linked to asbestos exposure. Via a simple blood test, the MESOMARK test enables doctors to monitor patients diagnosed with biphasic or epithelioid mesothelioma. “The MESOMARK test signifies the beginning of a new era in monitoring mesothelioma malignancies,” said Dr. W. Jeffrey Allard, vice president and chief scientific officer of Fujirebio Diagnostics. “As the first in-vitro test for patients with this aggressive disease, it will enable
Blood test spots ’asbestos cancer’
A simple blood test could detect early signs of deadly 'asbestos cancer', scientists have claimed. Patients with mesothelioma - often caused by exposure to asbestos - often die within a few years of diagnosis. But in a study published in The Lancet, researchers say checking levels of a key protein can identify over 80% of cases at an early stage. Earlier detection would mean doctors could treat the patient using chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. Mesothelioma affects the mesothelial tissue surrounding the lungs. The aggressive cancer develops decades after asbestos exposure. But not all those who worked with asbestos go on
NYU Study Validates Use of the Fujirebio Diagnostics MESOMARK® Test for Monitoring an Asbestos-Linked Cancer
There is new hope for the thousands of Americans suffering from mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer linked to asbestos exposure. Results from a recent study conducted by researchers at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine1 show the MESOMARK® Assay, the world’s first and only in vitro test for monitoring mesothelioma developed by Fujirebio Diagnostics, Inc., is an effective way to measure proteins within the blood that reflect changes in disease. The findings represent a major milestone in the management of mesothelioma, as the test may enable doctors to more accurately monitor patients for treatment. Mesothelioma causes fluid to
Mesothelioma scientist wins Premier’s award
scientist who has developed a blood test to help diagnose mesothelioma has won the top prize at this year's Premier's Science Awards in Western Australia. Professor Bruce Robinson won the $10,000 prize which honours the most outstanding achievement by a Western Australian scientist in scientific research and leadership. The awards were presented by WA Premier Geoff Gallop last night. Professor Robinson says he started researching the disease because he wanted something good to come out of the disaster of Wittenoom, which has seen hundreds of people affected by the asbestos-related cancer. He says the blood test works with other tests to diagnose the
