Shock figures on asbestos

Plymouth remains a hotspot for asbestos-related deaths, according to new Government figures. Statistics for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) reveal that 86 people in the city died from mesothelioma - a cancer strongly associated with exposure to asbestos - in the five years to 2003. Lung disease victims remembered
Latest figures show 635 from the region died from the disease mesothelioma, between 1999 and 2003. Christine Knighton, of Wallsend, lost her husband Mick, 59, who was in the Navy, to the disease in 2001 and has raised more than £100,000 for research. She will lead a vigil on the Millennium Bridge in Gateshead at 1600 GMT. Mesothelioma affects the membrane lining of the chest and leads to symptoms of breathlessness and chest pain. Australia has a real problem with asbestos and asbestosis, in fact the worst record in the world and it hasn't peaked yet. It's claimed that up to 26,000 Australians will die from asbestos-related disease in the workplace in the next 20 years.
